Burlington Centaurs Full Monty Heald Pre-Season Tournament Recap

This past Saturday, April 18th, the Burlington Centaurs Rugby Club hosted their 1st Annual Full Monty Heald Pre-Season Tournament at Norton Community Park in North Burlington.

Monty Heald, for who the tournament is named after, was on hand on Saturday to kick off the Tournament and present the Award winners back at the clubhouse.

Monty is one of the founding members of the Burlington Centaurs RFC and was the team’s 1st club captain. He was the 2nd club president of the Centaurs and he ultimately became a lifetime member of the Club. Monty also served as president of Rugby Canada (1991-1999) and in 2013 was inducted as a Rugby Canada Honourary Life Member.

Thank you Monty for supporting the tournament and demonstrating what it means to be a true rugby gentlemen.

The tournament consisted of two men’s divisions including the Burlington Centaurs 1st & 2nd XV, Stoney Creek, Toronto Dragons, Toronto Buccaneers 1st & 2nd XV, Sudbury Stones, and the Grimsby Gentlmen. The tournament also involved a women’s showcase game between the Burlington Centaurs and Stoney Creek.

The spring weather was warm and sunny and the turf fields provided some fast paced action from the Centaurs backs which were too much for the opposition to shut down with the Centaurs 1st XV going undefeated and winning the Division I.

The Division II competition was very even on the day with the Burlington Centaurs 2nd XV and the Sudbury Stones splitting the tournament for a tie.

Thanks to the Dickens Pub for setting up on site to provide food and refreshments for all the teams and to Tim Morton for organizing the teams and the tournament.

Special thanks to John Guilfoyle and Carolyn Ritchie for taking photographs on the day.
