Rugby Ontario Gee Gage Cup Recap



The Burlington Centaurs participated in the Gee Gage Cup this Fall.

Round 1 of the Gee Gage Cup was at home at Sherwood Forest on Saturday, October 3rd. The Burlington Centaurs forward pack caused a lot of problems for the Balmy Beach II side. Unfortunately the skilled backs of the Beach II were able to capitalize and the with the Burlington Centaurs were defeated by the Balmy Beach II by a final score of 48-10.

With a weekend off for the Thanksgiving, Round 2 of the Gee Gage Cup resumed on Saturday, October 17th at Sherwood Forest Park with the Burlington Centaurs hosting Balmy Beach III team. The Centaurs came out strong against the Balmy Beach III and dominated every facet of the game to come away with the win and a chance to play for the Gee Gage Cup Consolation Final. Burlington Centaurs 65 v Balmy Beach III 15.

The Gee Gage Cup Consolation Final was a Halton Region match-up with the Burlington Centaurs v the Oakville Crusaders II and was held at Crusader Park this past Saturday, October 24th. With an early morning kick-off the Centaurs arrived to Crusader Park eager to take the rugby pitch. The Centaurs were the first to score with penalty kick by Brendan Bryan. Denny McCarthy was an offensive force on the pitch outrunning the Crusaders defence to score under the posts. Denny McCarthy would score two tries on the day. Josh Jones and Jordan Tanner would also score in the first half along with Colin McLeod from the back of a scrum. At the half the score was 29-19.

In the second half the weather turned colder and the rain started to fall from the sky but the Centaurs spirits could not be dampened even after the Crusaders were able to score and keep the game tight. The game action in the second half was back and forth with Mike Boulanger and Darryl Vermeulen scoring tries in the 2nd half to keep the Centaurs victorious at the final whistle to defeat the Oakville Crusaders II and for the Centaurs to become the 2015 Gee Gage Cup Consolation Final Champions. Burlington Centaurs 39 v Oakville Crusaders II 31.
