Weekend Recap May 27 – Roddy Allan Festival

RODDY ALLAN FESTIVAL: A huge success by all accounts with nearly 900 athletes, 2000 people, and 1000 hot dogs grilled, all hosted at Sherwood. This is the 9th annual tournament that opens the season in Mini Rugby for teams from Niagara to Markham.

U8s: With a big squad of new kids and seasoned players, the U8 Mini-taurs acquitted themselves very well, narrowly dropping a game to Hamilton 6 -5, then playing strong against older experienced squads from the Markham Irish and Toronto City. Coaches Alex Rappos and Aislinn McNally are thrilled about the future with such a great crop of new and current players and families at the club.

U10s: This seasoned group of players, with some new faces and under the tutelage of Coaches Leigh Bowen and Clayton Gillis started off slowly against Toronto.  Later efforts equaled their adversaries against Hamilton and perennial opponents Oakville. Plenty of great passing and player support indicate a strong squad in the offing for this new season.

U12s: Kicking off the summer rugby season with a dedicated, motivated squad, the U12s were very nervous before their first game with only 5 practice sessions under their belts. Dominating a first game against Markham, the team held a strong defensive line preventing any Markham tries! Subsequent games were outstanding, marked by completed tackles, cohesive play and copious supporting cheers. Coach Chloe Seidner is very proud of the 12s and is excited for the season ahead. Watching this squad learn and grown will be something to behold, and marks a team to look out for during this season’s festivals.
